The New York City subway system is run by the MTA under the operating agency MTA New York City Transit.

The MTA has been publicly publishing day-to-day subway ridership data since the beginning of the COVID pandemic.

In 2019, the New York City subway system had an average weekday ridership of 5,493,875. That average decreased to 2,040,580 in 2020.
