Sergei Kuzhugetovich Shoigu is the current Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation. He was appointed to this position by President Vladimir Putin on November 6, 2012. Prior to this, he served as Minister of Emergency Situations from 1991 until 2012.
Shoigu has faced criticism by the Russian right because of his handling of the Russian invasion in Ukraine. Despite the Russian leadership replacing the commander of the Russian troops in Ukraine multiple times, Shoigu has retained his position as the defense minister.
