Question description

The Golan Heights is a 700 square mile territory recognized by the international community as Syrian territory. 500 square miles of it is occupied by Israel. Israel had de facto annexed it in the Six-Day War of 1967 and imposed its laws on the territory. The occupation is not recognized as legal under international law.

According to this article in the Jerusalem Post discussing a book on the subject, "Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu considered a deal with Syria that would have seen Israel give up control of the Golan and have a demilitarized zone established along the Jordan river."
