Azerbaijanis are the second-largest ethnic group in Iran. There has been recent political tension between Azerbaijan and Iran due the latter accusing the former of fomenting separatist sentiment in its territory. Azerbaijan has fought several conflicts against Armenia for the same reasons.
There has been an effort of rapprochement between the two countries, however.
